If you work in Brisbane you're about to get a long weekend this August, so why not get out and about exploring what's available in your backyard!

Spend this year’s Ekka long weekend, Friday August 14, Saturday August 15 and Sunday August 16 enjoying a break in the Heritage City!

The announcement that the holiday, which is usually on a Wednesday, was moving to Friday to create a long weekend has been welcomed by Ipswich tourism operators.  Read on to find out how you can get a taste of the Ekka here in Ipswich!

Live music at The Soul Nook

Picnic at The Soul Nook Collective

Kick off the Brisbane Ekka long weekend with a visit to The Soul Nook Collective!  

Famous for their boho styled picnics, the eclectic Marburg shop is pulling out all the stops for the Ekka long weekend, including live music by talented local artist Virjilla Joyce and the BrisVegans food truck on site from 11am-2pm on Friday August 14.

There will also be an aroma diffuser crystal bracelet making workshop at 10am, a kids tile art class from 11am and an adults paint class at 12pm.

The shop will also be open, a cupcake stall will be onsite selling delicious cakes and organic coffee will be available. 

See the Llamas at home

The Llama Farm | Ipswich

You don’t have to miss out on seeing the Ekka llamas either, they live in Ipswich.

See them in their own backyard at The Llama Farm in Pine Mountain during a weekend farm tour.

Tours start at 9am, Llama walks are also available at 3pm in the afternoons.

Strawberries and cream sundaes

Ungermann Brothers Ice Cream Parlour  Ipswich

Just because the Ekka isn’t on doesn’t mean you will miss out on the Ungermann Brothers stand. 

Get on down to Ipswich’s favourite ice creamery at 88 Limestone St to tuck into some special strawberry and cream sundaes that the ice cream chef has whipped up!  The ice cream parlour also has a new dessert menu out…

The sundaes will be available from Friday August 14 until Friday August 21.

An animal nursery at Haigslea…

Haigslea Ewe Nique Hobby Farm

At the Haigslea Ewe Nique Hobby Farm get up close to a range of friendly farm animals including alpacas, goat and chickens.

The sheep are also currently lambing so there’s plenty of babies running around too. 

Ewe Nique Hobby Farm are celebrating the Ekka long weekend with fairly floss, showbags and strawberry sundaes. 

Pro tip: Order a cuppa and slice of cake from the on-site cafe, sit back and let the kids use up their energy petting and feeding the animals!

Sample some local produce

Watercress Creek Olives and Limes

Head out to Watercress Creek Olives and Limes to taste test the local infused olive oils, tapenades, jams and olive products they produce on site.

You can even grab a picnic pack to enjoy in the olive grove with fresh tapenade, olive oil and dukkha, Turkish bread and olives. 

Wander through the olive trees and find a shady spot to sit and enjoy the produce.

Take one off the bucket list


If you’ve been wanting to try hot air ballooning for a while, why not take it off the bucket list this Ekka long weekend?

Floating Images Hot Air Balloon Flights is open and ready to make your dream a reality.  

The one hour flight takes you over the Ipswich countryside at sunrise before bringing you back down for a hearty breakfast at Fourthchild Cafe.

The Retro Diner Milkshake

The Retro Diner will be serving a special Ekka menu for the long weekend over August 14-16.  There’s pluto pups (dagwood dogs) with fries, mac ‘n’ cheese wraps, all day breakfast with banana and strawberry smash, French toast, crepes and more!

There’s also a crispy fisho burger, southern belle burger (shredded pork, crispy bacon and battered onion rings), the carolina (chicken schnitzel, crispy bacon, blue cheese sauce) and a sliders with BBQ Bourbon chicken, shredded pork and apple and vege patty.

Ekka loaded fries are also on the menu, fries loaded with crispy bacon, sweet chilli sauce and sour cream.

There will also be fairy floss, churros with Hershey sauce and strawberry field waffles!

Don’t miss the Ekka share platter, with a trio of sliders, four spicy chicken wings, mac ‘n’ cheese bites, crumbed fish strips with fresh coleslaw and sweet potato fries!

And look for the special shakes, Tim Tam, Cherry Ripe, Cookies and Cream, the PBB – peanut butter, banana and maple bacon and the Blue Heaven Unicorn comes topped with fairy floss!

Take a drive to the country

The Black Museum

Enjoy a country drive out to Marburg, stop in at Kholo Gardens for a walk and morning tea.  Then head to the Marburg Pub for some lunch.

Take the afternoon to check out eclectic shops like The Soul Nook Collective in an old Church, Scotland Yard Antiques and The Black Museum.

Spend the night at a farm stay close by, meet the resident chickens and horses at Tallavalley Farm B&B.

Head to the Ipswich Nature Centre to spot some cute Australian wildlife and farm yard animals.

Jump in the car for a drive to Harrisville to see the Summer Land Camel Farm and sample award-winning camel milk products.

And do a tour at Naughty Little Kids goat farm where you can taste their goat cheese and gelato.
