Make Ceramic tiles with Jane du Rand (Teens and Tweens)

Join them for a two session hands-on workshop and make relief tiles from clay.

The first session will involve making a series of wall tiles from clay. You will learn how to adjust the thickness of the tiles and add the sculpted relief work onto the tiles. You will work on the design of the group of tiles you make so that they work together a set. You will learn slab making, relief sculpting, carving and ceramic surface decoration. Your tiles will be fired between the first and second session.

The second session will be all about colour and glazing where you will learn to use glazes and underglazes, oxides and stains and how to combine colours.

All materials and tools will be provided, as well as reference material for your tile designs. Jane also has a fabulous collection of wooden Indian block stamps which we can use to add to the designs. If you have any specific designs you want to use, please bring these along and if you have favourite tools you prefer to use you are welcome to bring these too.

Firing costs are also covered in the workshop fee.

Each participant can choose the theme for their set of tiles, this can range from the natural environment, birds, animals, landscapes to botanicals and patterns.
