Join the Discover Ipswich Team

Discover Ipswich is calling for new members to join its Ambassadors team.

The Discover Ipswich Ambassador program is an opportunity for locals to be involved in the community while gaining work experience and attending some amazing events throughout the year.

Ipswich Visitor Centre manager Vanida Petts said volunteers were needed to help with day to day enquiries at the Visitor Information Centre and at events like Planes, Trains and Autos which was held on the May long weekend.

“Our friendly, knowledgeable volunteers are an integral part of welcoming visitors to the region and helping people know what’s on offer while they are visiting the Heritage City,” Mrs Petts said.

“It’s a lot of fun – you can get out and meet people and share insights into what makes the city great, and we get amazing feedback from volunteer ambassadors who tell us they really enjoy being a part of the program.”

Local residents who are enthusiastic about the Ipswich region make ideal ambassadors.

Training and uniforms are provided and there is an incentive scheme to reward volunteers.

Volunteers at Planes Trains and Autos

Ambassador Colette Whiteley, loves meeting visitors to the Heritage City and telling them her favourite things to do, see and eat!

“When I retired nearly 6 years ago, I wanted to pay back with volunteer work,” Mrs Whitely said.

She’s been volunteering for 6 years with no plans to stop and said she was constantly impressed by what Ipswich has to offer tourists.

“I thought I knew so much about Ipswich.  My first day here, I realised I knew nothing!  Every week I learn something new.   I love learning new things about my backyard.

“My best local advice is telling them to go to Lions Lookout to see if they can find some Lions.

“Because I’m a granny and now a great granny my absolute favourite place has always been Queens Park, I moved here in 1981 and it’s just always been fabulous.  And even now when meeting friends we go to the Queens Park Café.

“I work here because I like the comradery amongst the staff and I love meeting new people.  Can have a real joke with them.”

Mrs Whiteley said she’s also made lasting friendships while volunteering and has even travelled around Australia with another Ipswich Ambassador.

“I would encourage anyone curious about the program to find out more.”
