Ben Ungermann’s Ipswich icecream shop set to open
Ben, who was runner-up in the hugely popular 2017 series, is still fielding messages from fans in the UK and Ireland where the season finale has just aired.
He says he is excited to be launching his first venture, Ungermann Brothers, with brother Danny, in the heart of his home town.
“When we were looking for a place to set up, we were being shown around and (Pumpyard/Dovetails owner) James came out and showed us this, and it just felt right,” he said. The brick space is tucked in beside Dovetails restaurant in the heritage site that was once home to the Ipswich Technical College.
Ben says his ice cream will be unlike anything else on the market, made with “all completely natural ingredients and with no short-cuts.” There will be 15 flavours – plus one more to be decided nearer the opening in a competition.
Ungermann Brothers have already tested the water at the recent Brisbane Good Food & Wine Show where they received a huge rush of support.
Flavours will include bacon, maple and pecan; lavender and honeycomb, strawberry balsamic, matcha white chocolate; and choc mandarin with candied zest. There’ll also be a menu of “grown-up’s milkshakes” with alcohol in the mix with adventurous pairings like cardamom and coffee.
The ice creams will be served through one of the old sash windows of the building and there will be a retail space inside and an open kitchen where people can see the ice cream being made.
Ben said Ungermann Brothers would open in December.
