Future is here – try a driverless shuttle

Who remembers the Jetsons? For a certain generation or two, it was easy in childhood to imagine a future where humans would rip around in spacecraft-style vehicles. While we may not quite be there yet, driverless vehicles are most definitely on the way.

For many south-east Queenslanders, the first chance to jump on board a fully automated vehicle happens at Robelle Domain in Springfield Central. Trials of a self-driving shuttle will be rolling out over a week.

Free trips in the French-built shuttle, an EasyMile EZ10, will be offered from Orion Lagoon along John Nugent Way. Running from Monday, February 26 to Saturday, March 3.

The project is part of Ipswich’s Smart City program.

The EasyMile uses the latest technology to safely respond to environmental changes like moving pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. It can carry up to 12 passengers (six seated and six standing) and has disabled access. EasyMile spokesperson Simon Pearce says anyone is welcome to ride the shuttle during set public demonstration times.

The trip will take about five minutes.

Ipswich already has electric car chargers on smart light poles, and will soon begin Australia’s largest cooperative intelligent transport system program.

EZ10 public demonstrations will be at the following times:

  • Monday-Thursday: 10am-12pm, 12.30pm-2.30pm and 3pm-4pm
  • Friday: 10am-12pm
  • Saturday: 9am-11am
