City of Ipswich Tourism Update

Ipswich Tourism Update - May/June 2011 (Subscribers: 747) - Monday, 6 June 2011

Message from the Chairperson

Councillor David Pahlke

Well there’s no doubt that the first half of 2011 has been a trying time for tourism in Ipswich.  The flood event in January, the lingering effects of the Global Financial Crisis and the strong Australian Dollar have all combined to create new and ongoing challenges for tourism operators.

Despite these challenges, it’s gratifying to see the local tourism industry through the Ipswich Visitors and Tourism Association (IVTA), supporting the flood recovery effort by sponsoring accommodation and airport transfers for a group of 23 volunteer tradesmen from Young in NSW.  The tradesmen completed the rebuilding of seven homes during their visit and this community spirit just goes to show that tourism IS everybody’s business.

Exhibition booths to promote Ipswich as a tourism destination at various events and consumer shows seems to be paying off with average accommodation occupancy in April up 23% and 14% in May.  Even visits to our Discover Ipswich website are up 15% for the same period in 2010 so we’re definitely getting the word out that Ipswich has lots to offer and is worth taking the time to come and Discover Ipswich.

Remember... Tourism is everybody's business

V8 Supercars Rev Up Tourism in Ipswich

IPSWICH City Council and Queensland Events have entered into a joint sponsorship agreement to secure V8 Supercars for a further three years at Queensland Raceway.  The three year agreement provides a confidence boost to Ipswich tourism operators especially those in the accommodation sector.

Local tourism will also benefit from television promotion of Ipswich as a destination in its own right through the inclusion of Postcards from Ipswich segments during the broadcast.

A master plan for the Ipswich Motorsports Precinct was adopted by Ipswich City Council in 2005 aimed at strengthening its role as a nationally recognised motorsport arena.   The five kilometre buffer zone around the precinct to protects the area from further residential development.
